Hebden Bridge, 30 minutes
Two-wheel drive; farm track can be muddy
Solo readers and rainy weekends
A place that asks nothing from you.
Moor Cabin makes no attempt to compete with the moor outside. It gives you an open fire, a stack of dry wood, a window seat wide enough to sleep in, and a shelf of books left by previous guests.
Come when the forecast is poor. Rain on this roof is the whole point, and the walk afterwards is better for it.
- A single-room cabin for two, with an open fire, a deep window nook and a tin roof that makes the most of rain.
- A shelf of books left by previous guests — take one, leave one.
- Simple kitchen and a hot shower fed by the same water heater as the radiators.
- Bad weather is the recommended booking condition rather than a risk.
Open Yorkshire moorland above the Calder valley, half an hour from Hebden Bridge and easy to reach from Leeds or Manchester.
The final approach is a farm track; in wet weather park at the gate and walk five minutes.
On arrival
Fire lit before anything else. Wet coats on the hooks.
Afternoon
Window nook, blanket, whichever book the last guest left.
Between showers
Walk the moor edge while the weather breaks.
Evening
Something slow on the stove, rain on the tin above.
Morning
Tea in bed. There is no schedule to keep.
